Your Opportunity to Help a Deserving Young Person

          The West High School Vocational Agriculture Class was Robert's favorite.  Vo-Ag has been the vehicle used to teach many vocational skills to high school students and the means to expand science and mathematics into practical crop and livestock practices. The program also promotes leadership skills ranging from public speaking to competition in livestock and crop judging.  The basics of electricity, diesel engine technology and welding are just some of the skills Robert learned in his "Ag Class."  Although most students are also members of FFA (Future Farmers of America), where they learn leadership qualities, many apply the skills they learn in the Vocational Agriculture program to non-farming careers.  Both boys and girls attend this class.

             A memorial scholarship fund was established after Robert's death and two $500 scholarships are awarded each year to deserving graduates of the West High School Vocational Agriculture Class.  The recipients are selected by a committee that includes educators, community business leaders, Robert's mother and myself.  A genuine need for financial assistance to continue their education must be present.  

          The scholarships serve two purposes.  Obviously they allow us to help deserving students continue their education.  Equally important, it allows me to address a large number of both students and parents on the night that all of the various scholarships are presented, reminding them of why the scholarship fund exists.  I tell the students who are about to go off to college to please remember the choices Robert made that cost him his life, and to make decisions they can live with.
