Resources for
Parents/Guardians
As a parent or
guardian raising a young person, you've undoubtedly seen or heard
the many public service announcements encouraging you to "talk
to your kids about alcohol and other drugs." You
may have tried to and your son or daughter just rolled their eyes,
or the conversation ended up in an argument. Or you just may
be intimidated by the thought of it, not knowing how to begin the
conversation.
Fortunately there are
numerous resources to help give you guidance in starting that
crucial dialog that will hopefully keep your son or daughter safe by
helping them make better personal choices regarding alcohol and
other drugs. One of the best ways to prepare for that talk is
to educate yourself on the many temptations young people of today
have to deal with, especially when it comes to the many different
ways some of their friends might be "getting high" and
pressuring your child to join them. I have included several
links that will bring you up to date on youth substance abuse
trends. If you aren't already dealing with pre-teen or teen
substance abuse in your home, and because of it not being a current
issue under your roof you are clueless as to the things some young
people are doing these day to "get high", prepare yourself
for what you are about to learn. To use a term from my
generation, "it will blow your mind."
